administration has changed the manner of making
payments to the baseball program. Instead

note of this for the future.
LANCERS FIND SUCCESS
OVER WEEKEND (5-29-07): The
Trombly Braves, featuring four Lancers, won the
So Cal Showdown Tournament in Palm Springs over
the Memorial Day weekend.
Aaron Gates pitched
the semifinal game, earning the win, with
Brandon Maurer

the final, Aaron (2-3) hit a three-run home run,
while Gerrit Cole
threw 4.1 innings for the win.
Pierce Bily added
two hits in the game. Many of our freshman
played this weekend on the Trombly Panthers,
coached by Tim Wallach, which reached the
final of its tournament. It was a great
Memorial Day weekend for many of our returning

Trombly Braves and Panthers are club teams not
affiliated with Lancers Baseball or Orange
Lutheran High School.

ORANGE CITY NEWS
ARTICLE ON DANIEL RENKEN (5-17-07):
Today's edition of the Orange City News
has a nice
article on Lancers' senior pitcher, Daniel
Renken.
FROSH LOSE 1-0 IN FINAL
GAME (5-11-07): The Frosh
wrapped up a solid season with a tough one-run
loss to J Serra. Bobby
Wheatley threw six solid innings,
allowing just one unearned run on two hits. The
Lancers played well down the stretch, winning
seven of their last nine games to finish as
Trinity League
Co-Champions with a 9-6 record.
Overall, the Frosh ended with an 11-10 record,
which is a fine result considering that six of
our top freshmen played on the JV team.
Obviously, Orange Lutheran has a lot of talent
in the Class of 2010. Combined with the
JV's excellent 20-5 record, Lancers fans
have a lot to look forward to in the upcoming
years.
FROSH EDGE J. SERRA 5-3
(5-10-07): The offense worked
well together, manufacturing five runs.
Josh Hong hit a
timely double for two RBI.
Andrew Thurman
pitched a complete seven- inning game, earning
his fifth win of the season.
Drew Luther caught
a great game, throwing out two base runners at
second. The Frosh have one more game:
Friday, 5/11/07, 3:15 pm at J Serra.
JV FINISHES GREAT
SEASON IN STYLE (5-9-07):
Grahamm Wiest
pitched a complete-game shut-out (6 hits, 6 K's
and 0 BB) to lead the JV to a 4-0 victory over
J. Serra in the final game of the season.
Robert Ward broke
the 0-0 tie game in the fourth inning with an
RBI single, and Kyle
Hilton added more with 2 RBI on a base
hit in the 6th. Also at the plate,
Willie Shaw was 2
for 2. The defense behind Wiest played solid,
errorless ball. Congratulations to the JV
Lancers on an excellent season, finishing with a
20-5 overall record, 12-3 in the tough Trinity
League! We look forward to watching many
of you on the varsity team in 2008.
ALUMNI OLSON, JARVI AND SHOPSHIRE
HONORED (5-8-07):
Cory Olson (2005)
was named first team All League in the Orange
Empire Conference, and
Serrin Jarvi (2005) and
Ryan Shopshire (2004) were named to the
second team in the same conference, which is
considered the highest ranked conference
in junior college baseball. Cory is an
outfielder for Orange Coast College and has
enjoyed a tremendous year, batting over .400.
Ryan and Serrin also both pitch for OCC.
Serrin has a 4-2 record with four saves, and
Ryan compiled a fine 4-2
record before his injury derailed his season.
Congratulations from the Lancers family to all
three of them. The
Alumni page has been updated today, so take
a look at how our alumni are faring.
SHOPSHIRE AND ENLOE
BACK IN ACTION! (5-8-07): We
are extremely pleased to report that Lancers
alumni Ryan Shopshire
(2004) and Kyle Enloe
(2005) have both returned to the baseball
diamond after suffering serious facial injuries
a couple of months ago. Ryan started for
OCC on May 3, 2007, throwing four innings
without allowing a run. Kyle appeared in
games for Fullerton College in late April and
early May. The entire Lancers family gives
thanks for Ryan and Kyle's unexpectedly rapid
recoveries.

WHO ARE
THESE GUYS?
Believe it or not, all
of these Lutheran High School students are
on the 2007 Varsity baseball team. Can
you name them? Well, we are here to
help. From left to right the Lancers
ballplayers who attended the Prom are Gerrit
Cole, Tyler Smith, Jonathan Kline, Daniel Renken, Justin Lambert, Brett Wallach, Billy
Vinovich, Austin Bell, Daniel Gray, Pierce
Bily, Jimmy Sandford, Andrew Jarvi, and Cody
Ratliff.
LANCERS'
SEASON ENDS WITH LOSS TO M.L. KING
In a disappointing
finish to the season, the Wolves of M. L.
King (Riverside) beat the Lancers, pounding
out twelve hits en route to a convincing 7-0
upset of the Lancers in the first-round CIF
playoff game at Mt. Sac. College on May 18,
2007. The Wolves jumped out to an
early lead, scoring four in the top of the
first inning. The Lancers came back to
load the bases with one out in the bottom of
the inning, but in a play which set the tone
for the game,
Daniel Gray's
line shot up the middle was snatched by the
second baseman, who then turned it into an
easy double play. In the fourth
inning, Gerrit
Cole smashed a
deep fly to the warning track in dead center
of the large Mt. Sac. field, missing a
three-run home run by a few feet.
Otherwise, the highlights were few and far
between for the Lancers.
Jonathan Kline
led the offense with three singles, and
Billy Vinovich
and
Austin Bell
added pinch hit singles to account for the
Lancers five hits.
Justin Lambert
and
Brandon Maurer
pitched the final 2.1 innings without
allowing a run. The disappointing loss
ends an otherwise strong season for the
Lancers, who finish with a 19-8 record.
WALLACH
CO-MVP OF TRINITY LEAGUE; RENKEN PITCHER OF
THE YEAR
Brett Wallach
was selected as
Co-MVP of the
Trinity League, sharing the title with Mater
Dei's junior shortstop, Tyler Rhamatulla,
and Daniel
Renken was
named Pitcher
of the Year.
Congratulations to both Lancers for their
outstanding seasons.
Brett Wallach,
a senior shortstop, has led the Lancers in
hitting all year, finishing the regular
season with a superb .411 batting average
and also leading the team in hits (37) and
runs scored (30).
Daniel Renken,
also a senior, finished the regular season
with a record of 8-2 and an ERA of 1.359.
Three other Lancers were named to the
Trinity All League
First Team:
Senior third-baseman,
Daniel Gray,
senior pitcher/first-baseman,
Jonathan Kline,
and junior pitcher/center fielder
Aaron Gates.
The Trinity All League
Second Team
includes senior catcher/first-baseman
Andrew Jarvi,
junior pitcher/outfielder,
Gerrit Cole,
and junior pitcher,
Brandon Maurer.
Congratulations to all of our honorees.

GRAY AND RENKEN NAMED TO NORTH-SOUTH
ALL-STAR GAME
Coach Grahovac is
pleased to announce that two Lancers
seniors have been selected to represent
Orange Lutheran High School in the
"North-South" Orange
County All-Star Game,
sponsored for the last forty years by the
Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim. This
is the premier All-Star game in Orange
County, pitting the best players from North
Orange County against those from the South.
Despite battling an
injured back through much of the season
which forced him to miss or come out of
several games,
Daniel Gray
batted .385 for the regular season (second on the
team), and was third in RBI with 18.
Daniel also is one of the best fielding
third-basemen in the county, having made
several key plays throughout the season.
Projected as one of the top pitchers in the
county prior to the season,
Daniel Renken
lived up to the expectations, anchoring the
Lancers' pitching staff with an excellent
8-2 regular-season record and a microscopic 1.359 ERA.
Batters need to prepare for Daniel's 90's
plus fastball, which make them even more
susceptible to his equally effective
change-up and curve. Among his many
impressive statistics, Daniel struck out 64
batters while walking or hitting only
23 in 57 innings. Originally your webmaster
understood that
Brett Wallach
was also selected to the team, but in fact
this was not the case. Brett
would have been another deserving choice,
but picking all-star teams is always a
difficult process with many different
considerations, and he was not selected.
We apologize for any confusion this error
caused.
The game was played on June 5, 2007 at 7:00
pm at Glover Stadium in Anaheim with the
South edging the North 6-4.
COLE'S
NEAR NO-HITTER HELPS LANCERS WIN IN SEASON
FINALE
Coach Grahovac
intended for
Gerrit Cole to
pitch only four innings in the season
finale, but Gerrit had other ideas.
With an overpowering fastball and an
effective curve, Cole threw six innings of
no-hit ball, allowing only two walks in the
Lancers 2-1 win on May 9, 2007 at J. Serra.
The Lions finally broke through with a clean
single to left. Coach Grahovac left
Gerrit in for one more batter, and he struck
out the Lions' best hitter, Gerrit's
eleventh strike-out of the game. J. Serra
made it interesting, as they had to win this
game to advance to the playoffs. After
Cole left the game, two more hits knocked in
one run, and the Lancers intentionally
walked the bases loaded with one out.
Brandon Maurer
came in and induced a grounder to first on
his first pitch.
Andrew Jarvi
threw home for one out, and catcher
Robbie Vaughn
returned it to Andrew for an unusual 3-2-3
game-ending double play. J. Serra's
senior ace,
Cory Kohnke,
again pitched an excellent game against the
Lancers, allowing just four hits, but the
Lancers finally broke through in the sixth. Andrew Jarvi
singled Aaron
Gates (1-2, W)
to third, and Aaron scored on an error by
the third baseman on the throw.
Daniel Gray
then lined a single to right to move Jarvi
to third. After Daniel stole second,
Tyler Smith
lifted a sacrifice fly to deep left field to
drive in the second and final run.
With the win, the Lancers finished the regular season
with a fine record of 19-7, 11-4 and
second place in the Trinity League.
SENIOR NIGHT:
The Lancers' ten seniors were honored before
the J. Serra game at Hart Park on May 7,
2007. From left to right: Daniel

Ratliff, Billy Vinovich, Austin Bell, Jimmy
Sandford, Justin Lambert, Jonathon Kline,
and Brett Wallach.

LIONS
GIFT-WRAP GAME WITH FOUR WALKS IN SEVENTH
Nothing went the
Lancers' way in this game until the bottom
of the seventh when J. Serra walked four
batters in a row, all with two outs and the
last two with the bases loaded to drive in
the tying and winning runs in the Lancers
4-3 win at Hart Park on May 7, 2007.
The Lions scored single runs in the first
two innings, to take a 2-1 lead, the Lancers
(18-7, 10-4) plating one run in the first on
a long double off the left-field wall by
Brett Wallach
who later
scored on a groundout by
Andrew Jarvi.
The Lions' sophomore pitcher, Dylan
Christenson, pitched well, though the
Lancers hit several shots, including
warning-track fly balls by
Gerrit Cole
and Jonathan
Kline.
Finally in the sixth a clutch hit by, who
else, Brett
Wallach, drove
in Austin Bell
who had singled and moved to second on a
single by Billy
Vinovich.
Two doubles in the top of the seventh pushed
the go-ahead run across for J. Serra, which
desperately needed this game in their battle
with Servite for third place and a play-off
spot.
Aaron Gates
opened the seventh with a line drive single
off the pitcher's foot and moved to third on
two outs. Then Christenson hit the
wall, walking in succession
Gerrit Cole, Austin
Bell, Tyler Smith
(RBI) and
Robbie Vaughn
(RBI) for a crushing loss for the Lions.
Andrew Jarvi,
Jonathon Kline
and Daniel Gray
collected the other hits for the Lancers.
Daniel Renken
pitched another complete game in earning his
eighth win, allowing just two earned runs on
five hits, six strike-outs, and one walk.
WALLACH
AND KLINE'S DRAMATIC HITS SAVE LANCERS
Perhaps we can blame
the after-effects of last night's Senior
Prom, but the Lancers probably played their
poorest game of the season, yet with six
runs in the last two innings, they pulled
out a dramatic 7-6 victory at St. John Bosco
on May 5, 2007. Due to numerous errors
and other poor fielding, the Braves built a
5-1 lead after five innings. The tired
Lancers (17-7, 9-4) finally awakened in the
sixth.
Pierce Bily and
Cody Ratliff
walked, and
Brett Wallach
singled in Bily. After a perfect bunt
single by
Jonathan Kline
loaded the bases,
Aaron Gates
rocketed a double to center field to clear
the bases and tie the game at fives.
Unfortunately, two hit-batsmen led to a
Braves run in the bottom of the sixth.
However, the Lancers rose from the ashes in
the seventh.
Gerrit Cole
beat out an infield single and took third on
a two-out single by
Brett Wallach
(3-4, W, 3 R, RBI), who took second on the
throw. This led to a dramatic two-out,
two-strike single to center by
Jonathan Kline
(3 hits, R, 2 RBI) just beyond the diving
glove of the Brave's second baseman. A
key defensive play by third-baseman
Daniel Gray
(1-2, 2 W) in the fourth kept the game
close, and
Brandon Maurer
(Win) and
Gerrit Cole
(Save) pitched well in relief.
Andrew Jarvi
had an RBI Sacrifice
Fly and two hits.
COACH
THOME REACHES 100 WIN MILESTONE!
Our Congratulations go
out to Coach
Dan Thome, who
on May 2, 2007 recorded his
100th victory
as Junior Varsity or
Freshman Head
Coach at Orange Lutheran High School.
Dan started coaching with Lancers Baseball
in 2001, first coaching at the Frosh level
(15 wins over 2 seasons) and then with the JV
(85 wins over 5 seasons).
Over the years, Coach Thome has built the JV
program into a consistent powerhouse, and
again this year, he has led the team to an
excellent record of 18-4, and 10-2 (first
place) in the Trinity League.
All of our current varsity players were
coached by Dan two years ago when they took
the Empire League title. During the
season, Dan gets up at 4:30 am to be able to
leave work early for practices and games,
and his dedication and devotion to his
players and the sport of baseball infuse the
entire program. Dan is also the finest
public address announcer around at our
varsity home games. Thanks Dan for all
of your efforts, and we will look forward to
celebrating No. 200!
FOUR-RUN
FIFTH LIFTS LANCERS OVER BOSCO 5-3
Down 2-1 at the time,
the Lancers plated four runs in the fifth
inning and eventually held off a determined
St. John Bosco by a score of 5-3 on May 2,
2007 at Hart Park. The Braves scored
two unearned runs in the top of the first,
but Aaron Gates
singled in a run for the Lancers (16-7, 8-4)
in the bottom of the inning. After
leaving the bases loaded in the fourth
inning without scoring, the Lancers finally
broke through in the fifth.
Brett Wallach
(1-2, 2 W, 2 R)
singled and advanced to second on an error.
Jonathan Kline
sacrificed, but when the first baseman threw
that ball away, he ended up on second.
Wallach scored on a wild pitch, and after
Aaron Gates
(1-2, W, R, RBI) and
Andrew Jarvi
(3 W, R) walked,
Daniel Gray
(2-3, 2 RBI) rifled a single past the
drawn-in infield to drive in two.
Tyler Smith
finished the scoring by looping a RBI single
to left.
Jonathan Kline
pitched five innings to pick up the win,
allowing only one earned run while striking
out five.
Brandon Maurer
pitched the final two innings, allowing no
runs and striking out four to earn the save.

leaves Orange Lutheran, including leading a
talented team to a Trinity League title
and a CIF Division I title. On
December 20, 2006, hard-throwing junior
right-handed pitcher,
GERRIT COLE,
verbally committed to UCLA.
Here is a

entire Orange Lutheran Baseball program and
family in congratulating both Daniel and
Gerrit.
