ALUMNI CORNER
We would love to hear from our baseball alumni.
Email your messages here, and
we will post it below. Let us know how you are doing, whether you are
playing baseball or not. Give your encouragement to the current Lancer
baseball squad.
Minor Leagues:
Three Lancers were drafted in the 2007 Major League draft,
Paul Koss (2003, 11th round),
Matt Wallach (2004, 22nd round), and
Daniel Renken (2007, 35th round). Paul and
Matt both were drafted by the Dodgers, and both have signed minor league
contracts. Currently, they are teammates with the Dodgers' rookie league
affiliate, Ogden Raptors. Follow their progress on the
Ogden
Raptors website. (6-30-07).
Division 1 Alumni:
Paul Koss had a strong senior season, saving
sixteen games and winning three for USC, with a 2.79 ERA, and was drafted in
the 11th round and has been signed by the Dodgers. Unfortunately, the
Trojans failed to qualify for the postseason, but Paul was "Honorable
Mention" in the Pac. 10. Danny Grubb enjoyed
an excellent campaign with Fresno State, and was named to the First Team All
Western Athletic Conference team. The Bulldogs reached the finals of the
Regionals before losing to Matt Wallach's CSUF Titans. As we all know,
Danny is an excellent defensive catcher, and his bat heated up as well, as
he finished the season batting .289 with 3 home runs and 25 RBI. He also
threw out 24 base-stealers. Taylor Krick's
Long Beach State Dirtbags also made the play-offs, losing in the finals of
Regionals. Taylor earned a fair amount of playing time at third base and
batted a fine .292, including 2 home runs. Matt
Wallach had had some big games for Cal State Fullerton, including a
grand slam home run against Taylor's Dirtbags to lead the Titans to a big
come-from-behind victory on May 25, 2007. After starting the season on the
bench, Matt finished as the starting first baseman, ending the regular
season with an average of .267 with 4 home runs and 23 RBI. Matt was
drafted in the 22nd round by the Dodgers, and recently signed a contract.

2006 Grads: All of our Lancers 2006 alumni played well
in their freshman year.
"Big Kid" Kevin Craik had 2 saves in
12 appearances for Point Loma. Ryan
Hall made the most of his opportunities, batting 11 for 16 (.688)
at Chapman, which reached the Division III World Series, finishing fifth. Paul Deese pitches for
Chapman and posted a 2.00 ERA in eight appearances. Lastly,
Cole Hockenberry had an excellent season at Golden West, starting most games and batting
an excellent .336 with 26 RBI. (5-28-07)
Community College Watch: Marco Martelli
had a nice year at Cypress College, batting .291 with 2 HR and
25 RBI for the Chargers, which finished as runner-ups in the Junior College state
championship. Brandon Rohr in limited
playing time made the most of it, batting 6 for 16 with 2 RBI, also for Cypress
College. Over at OCC, Cory Olson
had a sizzling season, batting .381 with 4 home runs, and was named to first team All League in
the Orange Empire Conference.
Ryan Shopshire finished with a 4-2 record for OCC, coming back from his injury, and
was named to second team All League. Also at OCC, Serrin
Jarvi had a record of 4-2 with four saves and also was named to
second team All League. Kyle Enloe also
recovered from his serious injury and had 5 hits in 15 at bats for Fullerton
College. Josh Nasland had a
2-1 record, also for Fullerton College. (6-8-07)
Bobby Wooldrige:
Bobby's father, Brian, reports that Bobby "missed 3 weeks with a bad
infection but is back playing now. The team (Whittier College Poets) has
been up and down, losing a lot of games in late and extra innings, but have
been in almost every game. Bobby has played mostly at second
base, but has also started some games in left field, and also gets some work
at shortstop. He is currently batting .290, and has moved to the lead off
position in the batting order." (3-26-07)
Ryan Shopshire
almost throws no-hitter: Ryan came within
one out of the feat before allowing a single in the game on 2-22-07.
Corey Olson had three hits in the game easily
won by OCC. Here is the
game report.
